Ever wonder what it takes to go on the air and say words out loud to possibly a whole heck of literally some people? Well, fear not! I got you covered with just that.

Radio Humber On-Air Studio

Recently, I did a feature on Instagram, YouTube AND a Facebook Live video to give you a little glimpse of what I do on air at 96.9 Radio Humber in Toronto!

Recognize anybody? ;)

To break it down even further, it starts the night before...

Preparation is the absolute key to everything in terms of radio broadcasting. It takes a lot of prep to sound incredibly natural and as though you are having a conversation with the listener. You need to make it personal! Radio is a one on one sort of deal. As an announcer, it's your task to sound like you are reaching out to one person, but at the same time, you know for a fact that there is definitely more than one person listening. So, cunning linguistics are key!

Another thing to keep in mind! Are you in tune with what's going on in your city/town? If not... you might wanna get with it! News, events, gossip, pop culture, etc. Feel the beat of your city, and connect to your listener! It may sound simple, but you need to know who you're talking to better than you know yourself!

Eye contact! Remember that speaking to one person thing I mentioned above? Well, think about it this way. When talking to someone, just in your regular day-to-day, do you make adequate eye contact? Do you eyes wander? Are you really trying to get your point across? This is all something to think about when you are on air. Lots of radio announcers will either envision themselves talking to their target listener, or actually pull up a photo of someone they feel comfortable talking to and pretend they're talking directly to them. Individuality. That's what it's all about!

Finally, if you are even remotely interested in seeing what the wonderful world of radio broadcasting is all about, feel free to check out radio.humber.ca for more information!

As one of my professors always says, "keep that radio on!"

"Do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life"
